Schreker Hoard Update
A sale at Sotheby's went ahead on Wednesday in which a number of items from the Estate of Franz Schreker were sold for relatively unassuming reserves. Sadly the significant companies and institutions associated with the composer's life and music were not present at the sale, nor seemingly did they bid on the corrected proofs, autographs and cherished gifts that were being sold. Nevertheless, two of the items were saved for future research. Schreker's 1920s score of Gurrelieder, which he conducted at its premiere in 1913, went unsold. The corrected proof of Der ferne Klang has gone to an unknown owner, while Die Gezeichneten and Der Schatzgräber were luckily caught by an esteemed Schreker scholar, who has promised to make the documents available for research. Sadly, the auction proved that Schreker and his work are woefully undervalued in the current climate.
