It is, once again, time for the
Entartete Musik Advent Calendar. This year, following the series on the poetry of
Winterreise, the music of
The Nutcracker and the paintings of
Caspar David Friedrich, I am looking forward not only to Christmas, as any Advent calendar should, but also to 2014, marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of
Richard Strauss. More specifically, each day of the calendar, from today until 24 December, will feature one of Strauss's songs, from his very earliest, fitting entitled 'Weihnachtslied', to the very last, what have become known, since their publication, as the
Four Last Songs. Each will be illustrated by a painting by Ferdinand Hodler. It begins what will be an intense focus on Strauss over the coming year and I hope you enjoy the journey.
