Extraordinary Schreker Hoard
On 27 November, an extraordinary hoard of fin de siècle music goes on sale at Sotheby's in London. The Music, Continental Books & Manuscripts sale, which starts at 10.30am, features a number of items from the estate of Franz Schreker. They include the autograph manuscript of Schreker's 1932–3 melodrama Das Weib des Intaphernes; a marked-up copy of the full score Gurrelieder, probably used by Schreker when he conducted performances in the 1920s – he directed the premiere in 1913; the librettos for Schoenberg's Die glückliche Hand, Totentanz der Prinzipien, Requiem and Die Jakobsleiter, dedicated by Schoenberg to Schreker; proof copies of Universal Edition's scores of Schreker's Der ferne Klang, Die Gezeichneten and Der Schatzgräber, all annotated by the composer; Webern's autograph of Entflieht auf leichten Kähnen; and a copy of Wozzeck, dedicated by Berg to Schreker. All were given to the current owner by Maria Schreker, the composer's widow (pictured here with her husband). Maria and the present owner recovered Schreker's scores from Berlin after the end of World War II. Click here for more information.
