Even if Sir Simon Rattle is not coming to take charge at the LSO, the orchestra's being incredibly friendly with the conductor during its 2014/15 season, as announced this morning. And I'm sure the syntactical logic of mentioning former principal conductors after Rattle's name in the copy is intended to keep us on tenterhooks about who will replace Gergiev, which can't come soon enough.
Over the season, Sir Simon Rattle will join the Orchestra for a series of concerts exploring everything from Romantic oratorio and 20th-century masterpieces to a brand new children’s opera. And we’ll have visits from two figures who, as former Principal Conductors, are an integral part of the LSO’s history and identity – Conductor Laureate André Previn and Principal Guest Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, who celebrates his 70th birthday with a special gala concert in March.
