Shortly before the Christmas break, Mike Breneis, the CEO of Vienna-based record label col legno wrote the following:
The thing with recorded music isn’t getting easier. Some distribution partners closed their doors this year, David Byrne criticised current business models and the digital label Zero Inch stopped their business right in time for New Year’s Eve, due to economic reasons. And what is col legno doing? Well, we don’t care about bad mood, continue releasing colorful music, some on the old school CD, some via our new download webshop, doing a lot of persuading to put budgets together for supporting niche acts or little-known artists, have fun searching and finding new sounds, expanding our activities towards booking and artist management, looking forward to some Franui, Arditti, Pärt, Vocalsolisten, Cohen and plan some further change in 2014. Stay tuned! And why do we do that? Because we think that beyond the live concert, even non-mainstream music must be maintained, documented, adequately communicated and listened to. Because within the elusive and vast universe of the 'cloud', people need someone trustfully telling stories about new music of high quality. Because there are many listeners, music fans, festival directors, art foundation decision makers, wine traders and shoe makers who share our passion. Because there are many musicians and their music, we are willing to work for as long as it can’t get anymore. Which we hopefully will avoid.
I think we should all take a leaf out of that book for 2014.
