All Your Devotion

Today, my former flatmate, one of my closest friends and strongest allies celebrates a landmark birthday. It's important to pay tribute, not only for the joy he has brought to the last thirteen years of my and my husband's life, but also for the many, many things he has introduced into it. As his hero Sir Arthur Sullivan once offered:

Above all things, my dear ones, be united – stick together – for all, all for one – bickerings and quarrellings amongst brothers and sisters are unworthy, unnecessary and injurious. In the battle of life you want all your strength and all your devotion to each other. Therefore cling to each other with unyielding tenacity and let nothing break this bond. In me you know you have a second father, and your best friend.

So thank you for your strength and devotion and...

For prizing heart above time and supposed progress.

For understanding what true, meek Britishness is.

For appreciating the camper things in life.

For proselytising with such passion.

For introducing a new world of repertoire to me.

And for 'simple' food...
