My New Coloratura-Loving Friend
I promised back in 2009 that when I got a dog, he'd feature on here, in a bid to rival Alex Ross and Jessica Duchen's often-touted cats. After all, with Elgar, Schoenberg, Berg and Poulenc being dog lovers, among many others, I've always been rather surprised at the feline persuasions of the music writing community. Perhaps they have greater luck making Mahler converts out of their pets. Dogs aren't quite as compliant as you'd hope. Certainly Toby has already developed a love of coloratura, not least Natalie Dessay's recording of the Mozart Concert Arias and Cyndia Sieden's stratospheric turn as Ariel in Thomas Adès's The Tempest. But however doleful his eyes look, this is never going to become a bel canto house.
