Following the announcement
earlier this year of the extension of Riccardo Chailly's contract with the Gewandhausorchester until 2020, it was made public yesterday (though not by the opera house) that he will soon become the Music Director at La Scala in Milan. I hoped back in June that we'd hear more of Chailly in the theatre – preferably on this side of the Channel – and it seems that wish will come true when he takes up the post in Milan in 2017. When Daniel Barenboim is actually leaving La Scala is a point of debate, according to the Italian press, though his was only an
interregnum post. Chailly is, of course,
in London next week with the Gewandhausorchester, performing their complete Brahms Symphony Cycle,
out now on CD.
