The Elbphilharmonie opens...

...well, in miniature, at least. A model of the putative concert hall has been unveiled at Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg. Self-deprecatingly (and rather cheekily) the world's largest model railway announced that 'after 364 days of construction, and at only 0,05% of the building costs, compared to the neighbouring Elbe Philharmonic Hall, a first-class concert hall has come into being'. To celebrate the opening, a concert was given, also in miniature, with a soundtrack provided by the NDR Symphony Orchestra. Sadly the orchestra's real new home is far from ready. I reported back in September 2012 that the opening had slipped from the original date of 2010 to some time in 2015. Construction work now looks set to stretch into 2016, with an opening planned for three years hence, according to the website of the Westin Hamburg, which will sit atop Herzog and de Meuron's beguiling (if quixotic) edifice. Is this the Sagrada Família of our time?
