Berlin brings Sibelius to London

The Berliner Philharmoniker has announced a juicy residency in London in February 2015. Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sibelius, the concerts will feature a complete Sibelius cycle, under Simon Rattle's baton, as well as performances of Mahler's Second Symphony and music by Helmut Lachenmann. Sibelius may be a natural choice for Rattle, but the Berlin Phil hasn't performed much of his music, let alone a complete cycle, since Karajan's departure, as Gavin Dixon commented earlier on Twitter. Alongside the main programming there'll be family concerts and masterclasses with young British musicians, further details of which will be announced in 2014. Booking opens next week.
