Albert's Retreat

Having written many articles and programme notes and given 14 public talks or lectures since returning from the Salzburg Festival in August, I feel I'm due a bit of a break from my desk. While Entartete Musik will be running right up to Christmas, I've left the books behind to have a moment's rest at the Trout at Tadpole Bridge. Thinking I'd escaped all thoughts of Wagner, Verdi and Britten anniversaries – though I see Kasper Holten thinks we haven't had enough of old Richard – I read that the old landlord of this pub used to be one A. Herring. It's nice to think that Albert finally found the courage to leave Loxford.
