Live in the Sofiensaal

The good news is that the Sofiensäle in Vienna has not be allowed to rot to the ground. The bad news is that, like many recent development projects of historical sites, it has been turned into yet another apartment block. The central hall, where Solti's Ring, the Mackerras's Janáček recordings and many others were made – and featured in Christoph Loy's 2011 Salzburg Festival production of Die Frau ohne Schatten – has thankfully been preserved, allowing us to see inside this Viennese jewel once more. Yet aside from the new lick of paint, it remains a metaphor for the recording industry for which it was once a glorious hub. Now there's a gym, a hotel and restaurant. Progress?
