Happy 50th Birthday to the RNT
The National Theatre is 50 years old today. There are tributes in the press aplenty, but I just wanted to remember some of my highlights... Daniel Evans, Claudie Blakeley and Adrian Ross-Magenty in John Caird's melancholy-cum-merry Peter Pan, Clive Rowe's wonderfully endless encores of 'Sit Down, Your Rocking the Boat' in Guys and Dolls, almost everything in Trevor Nunn's production of Summerfolk, the clarity of motivation in Nunn's The Merchant of Venice, the presentation of everybody's story in Katie Mitchell's production of Three Sisters, the immediacy of Samuel Adamson's version of Ibsen's Pillars of the Community, War Horse, the warmth of Zoë Wanamaker as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, the superb physical comedy of One Man Two Guvnors... here's to many more.
