Do we listen to classical music at the wrong time? Most concerts are scheduled between 7pm and 8pm, after we've rushed from the office, haven't had time to eat and our concentration is at its lowest. Listening to Rudolf Buchbinder and members of the Wiener Philharmoniker in the glorious auditorium at the Grafenegg Festival on Sunday morning at 11am, I wondered whether we should try and programme more morning concerts. Of course working hours get in the way – isn't
this what flexitime is for? – but I personally felt a stronger connection to the performance than I would have done in the evening. It's the same at Wigmore Hall's consistently popular Coffee Concerts, scheduled every Sunday morning. I've heard
Gurrelieder in the morning in Vienna and the Gewandhausorchester played Mahler 9 at 11am last Sunday too. Relatively fresh from breakfast, with a (somewhat caffeinated) spring in our step, are we not better disposed to hearing and understanding the music that is being presented?
