Górecki Unveiled in Katowice

Musicologist Adrian Thomas reports that a memorial to Henryk Górecki has been unveiled in his hometown of Katowice. Górecki died in November 2010 at the age of 76. The sculpture is located in Plac Grunwaldzki, north of the centre of Katowice and less than five minutes’ walk from Górecki's former home. The memorial, by artist Zygmunt Brachmański – born three years after Górecki in the same small town of Rydułtowy – was unveiled by the composer's widow Jadwiga Górecka. The LPO will perform the composer's most famous work, his Third Symphony, on 27 November, before giving the belated premiere of his Fourth Symphony on 12 April 2014. That evening will include a pre-performance talk by Adrian Thomas, whose book Polish Music since Szymanowski is an invaluable guide to the music of Górecki and his compatriots.
